Civic

The Civic Engagement and Participatory Politics working group synthesizes current knowledge and outlines a scientific framework for understanding and evaluating the role of digital media in youth civic and political development and the implications for educational practice. The working group will form a prioritized agenda around issues that need future research. With digital media, youth have far greater access to information and audience, and have been using digital media with some success to investigate and learn about issues they care about, engage in dialogue with others, produce and circulate information to help shape the public conversation, and mobilize others for action (through fundraising, voter registration, petitions, etc.)–a collection of activities we identify as participatory politics (Kahne, Middaugh & Allen, 2015). While these shifts in practices have been the subject of a good deal of empirical research, studies of the benefits and risks for youth civic development are just emerging.
